Tomorrow sees the opening round of the annual P&O Irish Sea Winter supermoto series at Bishopscourt Co Down where current solo champion Keith Farmer will be looking to begin the defence of his title with maximum points.

However, Farmer will face stiff opposition from multi ex-Irish, Ulster and P&O series champion David McKee and current Ulster champion David Farmer.

A host of supermoto regulars like ex-car and motorcycle short circuit racer John McAndrews, Philip Wylie, Paul Gartland and ex-trials champion Alan Mark and his brother David will also be on show.

Quad machines play a prominent role in the supermoto series with Cathal McCartan and Justin Reid heading the entry tomorrow.

On behalf of the organising Killinchy Club, Sam McMinn said: “This is the 20th year of the winter supermoto series and the 16th year of sponsorship from P&O Irish Sea.

“The P&O winter series has been the backbone of supermoto racing and is firmly established in the motorcycling calendar.

“However, this year entries have been a bit slow to come in.

“But once again we are planning a four-round series with the final round at Kirkistown on Saturday, November 21, which will also be the final round of the British Championship, guaranteeing a quality entry,” McMinn added.

Following tomorrow’s opening round the P&O series moves to Kirkistown on October 31 and back to Bishopscourt for round three on November 14 before the finale at Kirkistown with the action at all four rounds scheduled to commence at 11.30am.

Meanwhile at Dechomet, Co Down, the third round of the Ulster Trials Championship, the Marcus Blain Trial, is organised by the Temple Club.

Andy Perry is leading the way in Grade A while a battle royale is expected in Grade B where defending champion and current championship leader Willie Dickey will come under extreme pressure from Jonathan Hagan and Philip Hanlon.

On the tarmac scene the Celtic Match Races are being held at Mondello Park, Co Kildare, on Sunday.

There is a strong Irish team taking part, including Mark Johnston, Glenn Irwin and Gerard Kinghan, will start as favourites against teams from Wales, Scotland and the Isle of Man.

First held in 1979 the four Celtic nations compete for the Manx Sword of State.

And this year it is the Ireland who host the competition where there will also be support races for superbikes, supertwins, Pre’97 and supersport machines in the final short circuit action of the 2009 season.
